"Reclaiming Creativity: How to Reestablish a Sketchbook Habit After Surgery"

Reclaiming my creative process post-surgery has been so delightful.

Just 5 months post-surgery, I am painting as much as time allows. I credit that to my new sketchbook habit. Picking up my sketchbook daily has helped me transition into a creative flow.

The sketchbook habit is something I have dabbled on and off with since high school. I love to bring a small sketchbook on travels and usually get inspired by those watercolor sketches, many turn into bigger pieces. However, I have not been very disciplined about it.

About 3 months post-surgery ( compound wrist fracture repair) I was cleared to do most things; painting and walking my dog were top of the list. I started bringing my little handbook on the porch and began a daily watercolor sketch of the birds that come to our feeder. At first, sketching was painful. All my little ligaments and tendons were weak but with time the pain went away and I was able to paint pain-free and work on my fine motor skills.

This has brought me so much joy and I’m obsessed with these birds.

The beauty of a sketchbook practice is its practice.

It’s a place to play and take chances. There is no pressure, no expectations. It's a beautiful way to be present in the moment.

Picking a theme is a fun way to fill a sketchbook and see how your skills develop.

My hand got stronger and my little bird sketches got cuter.

Want to start your sketchbook habit?

All you need is a sketchbook and something to draw with. I prefer a small sketchbook called a handbook, which is easy to travel with or throw in your purse a travel-sized watercolor palette, micron pens, my favorite pencil, a gummy eraser, and a little case to carry it all in!

Whether you consider yourself an artist or not. The sketchbook is there not to create masterpieces, it's there to keep your mind open and fresh.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions about starting a sketchbook practice.

Make art and be happy!
